Hydration: The Myth of 8 Glasses a Day

Wow, was I blown away during my chat with Dr. Dana Cohen and Gina Bria! Everything I thought I knew about hydration was at a minimum misguided, and much was just plain olde’ wrong!

In this episode, we explore hydration, and when you think you are dehydrated — you are incredibly dehydrated! I had no idea that with just a 2% loss of hydration there are obvious physical responses including loss of concentration and focus! The authors of the ground-breaking book Quench share with us so much more including:

• What are electrolytes and do we need them
• What is gel water and why its’ better for health and real hydration
• Why, in scientific terms, drinking 8 glasses of water/day is not optimal for hydration.
• Fascia – what it is, how we can use it to enhance our bodies’ hydration and the simple micro-movement that help drastically improve your hydration, plus so much more….

Full Interview

This episode begins with the tagline, “Eight glasses a day is not the way” with Dr. Dana Cohen and Gina Bria talking about a totally new revolutionary groundbreaking approach to hydration.

Co-authors of the book Quench: Beat Fatigue, Drop Weight, and Heal Your Body through the New Science of Optimum Hydration, they’ve laid out a better and a more efficient way of hydrating.

0:02:40.7 They now begin a very interesting discussion about  optimal hydration and why eight glasses a day is not the way. Dana stresses that hydration is the “baseline of all of our health” and it needs to be the first step in treating and preventing a chronic illness.

0:07:35.2 As to what kind of water to drink, Dana says we need to drink clean water ─ ideally, spring water. But, in the book, they don’t talk about that. Instead, they talk about “eating your water” which leads to a discussion on the other phase of water, the kind that holds an electrical charge which actually creates fuel for our bodies ─ a new science behind water.

Meaning, by getting more hydrating foods into your diet, we’re becoming more efficiently hydrated. We can hydrate with less liquid. We don’t have to drink as much.

0:18:15.10. The discussion now is on electrolytes, why we need them and how “eight glasses of water a day” often flushes out those electrolytes.

0:24:00.8 At this point, they begin sharing smoothie recipes. They also talk about how having the right fats in our diet is important to hydration

0:31:34.4 A great point about hydration is detoxification as a function of how well hydrated we are and that if we’re not hydrated enough, we’re not detoxifying well.

0:33:14.0 Gina now shares her love for ghee which has been found one of   most hydrating foods scientists had come across and how it’s good at releasing toxins and metals we’re exposed to.

0:41:04.7 A very surprising piece is how fascia is involved in hydration as a delivery system and how movement is the “second half of the hydration story” and that “We need to move in order to get that fluid where it needs to go.”

0:44:02.3 Gina talks about cell phone dehydration and shares simple movements to keep us hydrated while on the phone.
