Welcome to UnderstandingAutoimmune.com

I'm Sharon Sayler, affectionately called the ‘difficult people whisperer’ is a bestselling author, international speaker, founder of Competitive Edge Communications and now, producer and host of the popular OMTimes Radio Show: The Autoimmune Hour.

A Personal Note From Me to You...

You are not alone. I created The Autoimmune Hour Show and UnderstandingAutoimmune.com to encourage and inspire you to live well, whole, and complete regardless of your diagnosis. I know what it's like to hear it’s all in your head, or you are worried about nothing, or, what about a favorite ...women your age... (Do they ever say ...men your age?) I struggled for years to find the right answers.

Together, we explore all types of questions, such as:

What is autoimmunity?

I was told ‘my body was attacking itself.’ Well, then what would cause my body to attack itself now? Dr. Thomas O’Bryan, author of ‘The Autoimmune Fix’ and the docu-series ‘Betrayal: The Autoimmune Disease Solution They’re Not Telling You,’ shares with us that it all comes down to inflammation. He shows us why the two levels of our immune system may go haywire and how to ‘fix’ them.

What causes autoimmune conditions?

There are more than 100 currently known autoimmune conditions, so the causes are widely varied. Autoimmune issues seem to be caused by multiple factors, including your genetics, past medical conditions, exposure to toxins, and lifestyle choices such as poor nutrition and too much stress. At this time, research continues to look for what triggers the immune system to produce antibodies that attack our tissues, severely limiting its ability to fight infections. Dr. Nasha Winters shares how to develop a personalized, precision healing plan.

What is Functional Medicine, and can it help autoimmune?

Yes, Functional Medicine is a whole-system–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease, not just suppressing a symptom according to Susan Blum, MD, a true pioneer in functional medicine and a passionate advocate for those with chronic illness and helping them restore to a state of wellness. I loved her view on why the ‘fixer-model’ doesn’t fix and how to develop an excellent care team.

We even get into those 'who do I ask' questions like:

What do I do when ‘they’ say, “It is all in my head?”

Dr. David Clarke author of ‘They Can’t Find Anything Wrong!’ shares how the effects from long-term stress including adverse childhood experiences can harm your health now plus how unexplained symptoms can be the result of the brain sending ‘trapped emotions’ into the body.

Will working with my self-talk and mindset, change my autoimmune condition?

Research is ongoing, yet it is generally well-accepted that our mental and emotional states affect our overall health and our immune system. Expert Sarah Peyton shared ways to talk to yourself that promote calm and contentment - a great place to promote wellness and well-being.

Can finding my purpose help in healing?

Ani Anderson, the author of ‘Find Your Soul’s Agenda,’ shows how to navigate life’s challenges with ease when you discover your soul agenda. Plus, ways to release toxic emotions that may affect your health, vitality, and quality of life.

Is it menopause or autoimmune?

Maybe you’ve heard that dreaded “Well, women your age… fill in the symptom…” or “Don’t worry about it – it’s just menopause….” Pat Duckworth author of ‘Hot Women, Cool Solutions,’ shares with us ways to tell the difference and easy techniques to relieve common symptoms such as sleeplessness, anxiety, and mood swing.

Sometimes there is no silver lining — what then?

I know when I got my diagnosis, I had a profound sense of loss and a period of grief. And grief, loss, and failure are topics we don’t give enough voice to — compassion and grief expert Laura Jack shows us how.

And one of my favorite questions to ask yourself that Dr. Ganz Ferrance shared on the show is:
How Good Can I Stand It?
So, how good can you stand it?
