Positive Thoughts

The show begins with Sharon asking Dr. Susan Blum what got her interested in the autoimmune conditions to which she relates her own experience with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis which spurred her to want to understand why she had it.

Dr. Blum goes on to explain why functional medicine is the perfect vehicle for it as it goes to the root causes of the chronic health condition to actually treat them. Being conventionally trained, she says that she integrates everything but her main approach is functional.

0:06:01.6 This is where they start talking about the gut as the home base of the immune system.

Digressing a bit, she says that, unfortunately, people with autoimmune end up with different specialists offering different solutions. And that’s where functional medicine comes in with what they call, “systems biology” where they connect the organs system and do the whole person.

0:16:37.7 At this point, Dr. Blum discusses the need for a wellness model of health care rather than one that is focused on the disease model where the definition of health is the absence of those diseases as opposed to “vibrant, living your life to the fullest.”

They also discuss moving the locus of control from the physician to the patient and giving them the tools and the skills to participate in their own self-care which she says she tries to do in her first book, The Immune System Recovery Plan.

0:25:49.2 Sharon now asks about the basic steps in going through the immune system recovery program to which Dr. Susan breaks it down into four basics steps:  food, stress, gut, and toxins.

0:43:16.5 With just a few minutes left, Susan tells everybody the coaching programs and the tele-education services they can avail.
